I finally created my Etsy!

Though I sell at Old Hollywood's two locations in NYC, I like the option of making new pieces upon request. There's much more to add to the shop still, but I tried to start simple. The Etsy was something I could only do after figuring out my jewelry collection goal/philosophy and subsequent name. Thankfully it all came together after some googling (see previous hand weapon entries!) and the discovery of the Hindu Architect God, Vishwakarma, meant I had a name for my line and could proceed to put it out there.

Lord VISHWAKARMA of the multi-hand is creator of Universe. Lord VISHWAKARMA is described as the God of carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, masons and all those people who are skilled. Lord VISHWAKARMA is as great as Lord BRAHMA, VISHNU, MAHESH because all scriptures concerned with Hindu religion contains episodes of his glorious contributions, he was the architect and creator of cities and the powerful weapons of the gods.

Hand-fighting weapons are small, portable weapons, often worn covertly, and usually intended to wound or maim rather than kill. One such weapon, designed for concealment, was the bagh nakh or ‘Tiger’s Claw’. It was worn under a glove or between the fingers to give the wearer the advantage of surprise in duels and street fights.

This example is from Satara near Mumbai (Bombay) and is made of iron, with rings to secure it to the thumb and index finger and one of its four claws missing. Each ring has settings for two jewels, which have, at some point, been replaced with red and blue glass.

This is a vajra mushti (knuckleduster) from Andhra Pradesh in south India. Found it online while perusing jewelry design inspiration.

Vajra mushti means ‘diamond fist’ in Hindi, probably referring to the hardness of the blow this weapon delivered. This example is made of the horn of the water buffalo and was used by the Jettis, an ethnoliguistic group famed for their displays of boxing, wrestling and gymnastics. In traditional Hindu mythology, the Jetti are descended from the hero Devamallu, who killed the tyrannical demon Vajradanta with his bare hands. Consequently, the Jetti are believed to be particularly skilled at unarmed combat, and specialise in performing boxing, wrestling and gymnastics as spectator sports. Their services were specifically required at the festival of Dasara, where they performed before the Maharaja of Mysore.

On my recent megabus trip I found myself bored and watching old discovery channel podcasts on my itunes, when I found one about the prehistoric giant beaver, Castoroides.

Obviously I think beavers are incredible animals (even architects) and their ancient ancestors are even more awe inspiring. So then I started watching more on prehistoric animals, because I'm sort of a geek and think evolution of species is fascinating.

beaver jaws (especially these big ones) had jaws that could topple trees and gnaw trunks into pieces.

In the waters the Kronosaurus was also pretty badass.

I dont think I could ever, ever enter water if I knew this guy could be lurking around.

His name is Greek for Kronos lizard...

and Kronos was awfully badass himself: He was king of the Titans according to Greek Myth

(predating Zeus, these were the original all-supreme power beings, creators and controllers of land water sky elements et cet)

Omnipotent and ominous, Kronos was infamous for overthrowing his father as to reign as the Golden Age king of the Titans.

He was also remembered for castrating men with his sickle and eating his own offspring.

Anyway...On to happier ancient history

I then found the Saiga, which i think is oddly adorable, but bad ass at the same time.

Every Friday evening there is one thing lying between myself and my weekend:
"Mapping the Urban Environment"
an Urban + Environmental Studies class where we use ArcGis mapping software to give data a concise and clear representation. Though the software is finicky and occasionally wreaks havoc on my sanity, the results are enourmously satisfying. We are learning collaborative and open source concepts such as "crowd sourcing," (look into it) and a recent guest lecturer introduced us to OSM and the video below. Talk about satisfying! Inspiring, without a doubt.

An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap.org project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.

The video from good.is has great facts and insights on this "untouchable" area and demographic, its a crime that Los Angeles is effectively quarantining the area of skid-row and making the other parts of the city less comfortable or friendly towards the homeless. They are designing new plazas and upscale areas that keep homeless out, (even benches that are sleep-proof) and driving the homeless into an ungoverned area wrought with violence and crime, unsafe for all at nightfall. Nevertheless the video is true inspiration for my design thinking lab class, where we are working on a "homeless handbook" or a guide of sorts for freegans and those who want to live without material consumption. Our guide seeks to make ready or inform people how free resources can be gained while homeless and overtime work out of homelessness. However making those people do so as they are harassed by police and public disdain, as they are relocated into dangerous areas such as skid row is making it an uphill, seemingly impossible battle for all.

he has come up with a design innovation that both utilizes the natural sand resources by solidifying them with a naturally occurring bacteria, and create architectural structures that will help to prevent damages caused by the moving sand dunes in desert regions.

My friend suggested we finally henna my hair--a goal of mine since last semester--and I relized that this was the perfect time for it.

Having been a natural blond for two decades now, I was hesitant but I was also quite tired of carrying around a head of blonde hair and its associated stigmas/judgements. Im not too attached to my hair (i've have dyed it with koolaid & given myself the occasional hair trim) and Ive been playing with the idea of going dark for a while.

school time!

Okay so I'm like a month late on the news, but I've been busy. Back in nyc means back to business, means I need to balance homework with trying to move into and renovate my new apartment. Because of my closet like room I've been spatially challenged, and somehow my dad convinced me to help him create my own loft bed that connects to the upper shelves of the closet. This turned in to a bed/bookcase/desk and ladder all made out of plywood (thank you Prince Lumber) that subsequently has needed to be primed, painted, and finished.
it is yet to be finished. Like I said, its a challenge. Add in all the awesomeness of NYC and new things (I had a birthday, moved . . .) et cetera et cetera, and its easy to forget a blog. Nice thing about blogs though, is its like this little reminder book for me, I get to look back and remind myself of websites I've discovered, things I liked, things of interest. When I dont blog it I usually just bookmark a website, and its lost to the unorganized 100s of bookmarks I've saved. But I need to mental note these, and then get back to painting, maybe some mirror hanging, and then hopefully my 2pg spread homework. Then my print design homework . . . experimenting with camera manual settings annnnddd I think thats it. For monday.

But in the meantime, this is awesome and makes me so happy to be doing typography this year:

The great and famous tend to die young, and I will acknowledge that Michael Jackson WAS a great and musically talented genius.
Sadly he lasted long enough that his reputation withered
from time and his own senseless actions.

But lets be honest, the boy we all know from the Jackson 5 died a long, long time ago.
Perhaps MJ is finally at peace, reconnecting with his lost childhood for the first time.

of course I have my own theory, unproven of course but I can speculate.

I think his agents and publicists realized the cesspit of bad publicity that MJ had become entrenched in, and they knew there was no amount of sponsorships or campaigns that could wash away the stench of suspected child molestation and body disfigurement. Confronted with no way out, MJ submerged himself in said cesspit and disappered form the world. Death means sales, means tribute albums, maybe even a screenplay that they sold his life story for. Either way, the profits from his "death" are what will allow him to live, hidden away on secret island paradise, secluded from society in his own private neverland.
